Security in the palm of your hand: INTUS PS palm vein recognition :: 2008-09-04 11:14

At the SECURITY 2008 trade fair, PCS will present its easy to use, but highly secure INTUS PS authentication system. The identification of people in security-critical applications requires methods which must be easy to use but as fraud-resistant as possible. However, common biometric technologies are usually either simple, but not secure enough when used by themselves (such as fingerprint identification), or they are in fact highly secure, but very complicated to use (such as iris recognition). INTUS PS palm vein recognition now combines all the required functionality in a single solution. It’s extremely precise and secure (FAR: 0.00008%, FRR: 0.01%), it ensures high user acceptance thanks to its contact-free, hygienic scanning method, and it is virtually fraud-proof.

Ease of use for high user acceptance.

The INTUS PS system is very easy to operate – the user simply places the palm of their hand over a sensor. The scanner generates a template from the image of the palm vein pattern and compares it with a template stored in a system or on a personal card. Complexion, soiled skin, impurities, or superficial injuries have no effect on the recognition result. And the contactless identification process ensures maximum hygiene. A person is verified in less than a second.

Highest security.

The human palm vein pattern is extremly complex. Moreover, it is located inside the body, and thus well protected from abuse or manipulation. The layout of the veins, unique for each individual, remains unchanged throughout a lifetime. And the palm vein pattern also stays the same whether it’s warm or cold, which guarantees high security. Any unnoticed capturing of biometric characteristics – fairly easy in the case of a fingerprint – is reliably prevented.

And encryption applied to the templates applied during storing or transfer to another system effectively blocks unauthorized access attempts. Depending on the required security level, palm vein recognition can additionally be combined with an RFID card (template on card) or PIN code entry.

Integration with higher-level systems.

The INTUS PS system can be completely integrated with the INTUS access solutions. The INTUS PS system will behave just like a fingerprint terminal towards the Access Control Manager. For integration with third-party access control systems, INTUS PS is equipped with a Wiegand interface.

The principle of palm vein recognition.

Palm vein recognition is based on the absorption of infrared radiation (heat radiation) in venous blood. The sensor transmits infrared close range radiation towards the palms. The oxygen-reduced blood in the veins absorbs the infrared rays. The sensor camera creates an image of the vein pattern and converts it to a template with a file size of approx. 0.8 kB. The template is then saved to a database (for identification) or to a card or tag (for verification).
