What is RFID? An overview of the basics, security, and migration

What does RFID mean? RFID stands for “radio frequency identification” and refers to a contactless identification method in which data is exchanged wirelessly between a transponder and a reader. The method was already used in the military sector in 1940 and was later further developed for contactless identification.

An identification medium, also known as a transponder, contains a microchip on which information such as a serial number is stored. The microchip is connected to an antenna that enables wireless communication with an RFID reader. Identification media are available in various form factors, for example as an RFID card or key fob.

UHF RFID: longer range

Automatically open barriers and gates with license plate recognition via video or RFID long range readers.

In addition to traditional RFID technologies (13.56 MHz), access control is also seeing growing use of UHF RFID — especially where longer read ranges are required for automated vehicle or personal identification.

Depending on the transponder, reader, installation location, and environment, UHF technology enables read ranges of several meters. This makes it particularly suitable for vehicle access control, for example in parking areas and on company premises, as well as for applications at roll-up doors or in warehouse environments.

Legacy vs. modern RFID technologies

Many companies still use RFID badge technologies that only partially meet today’s security requirements. These technologies offer insufficient encryption and are vulnerable to copying and cloning attacks.

Modern technologies — recommended

  • LEGIC advant
  • MIFARE DESFire EV3

Benefits: Modern encryption technology, making them secure and future-proof

Legacy — not recommended

  • LEGIC Prime
  • HITAG
  • MIFARE Classic

Disadvantages: cloneable, outdated, and pose a security risk

RFID migration: switching to secure technologies step by step

An RFID migration should include the entire access control system — from RFID readers and terminals to key management and software integration. This makes it possible to systematically assess which RFID cards, components, and processes can continue to be used, need to be replaced, or can be migrated step by step. Current technologies increase the security level while keeping the migration plannable.
