INTUS 1600PS palm vein reader in an elevator

Palm vein recognition explained simply: identification by vein pattern

Biometrics are useful wherever card-based systems in access control reach their limits and stronger person-bound identification is required. Especially for high-security areas, palm vein recognition offers a high level of security while remaining convenient to use. It uses the individual vein pattern in the palm of the hand to identify people contactlessly. Depending on the system, palm vein recognition can be used for biometric identification or as an additional factor in authentication.

Biometric characteristics are highly sensitive data — and therefore come with a special responsibility. Before implementation, legal bases, purpose limitation, data protection measures, and template storage should be carefully reviewed.

What technology is behind palm vein recognition?

Handvenenmuster Darstellung

The method is based on the absorption of infrared radiation by the blood. The sensor of the access reader emits near-infrared radiation toward the palm of the hand. The deoxygenated blood in the veins absorbs the infrared radiation.

The palm vein scan captures the vein pattern and uses it to generate a biometric template for later recognition. This template is processed in encrypted form and, depending on the system, stored centrally or on an identification credential.
