'Access control' is defined and explained for you.

We explain what access control means, what the difference is to access control and how you can set up your physical building security: namely by networking all the trades involved.

Access Control, Access Management or Access Regulation – Which Term Is Correct?

Created by PCS Systemtechnik, July 8, 2025

Is it now called 'access control' when there is no 'control' at all? Or is it access control? Access control, also known as 'access regulation' or 'access management', is intended to prevent unauthorised persons from entering a company's premises, buildings, rooms and facilities unhindered. Access control therefore provides physical protection, i.e. building security.

Access regulation (or access control) generally refers to access to digital networks. Access control is an essential prerequisite for a comprehensive operational security concept that evolves alongside a company's needs. Reports of increasing white-collar crime, espionage, vandalism, sabotage, assault, terrorism, burglary and theft highlight the growing need for security. This underlines the need for effective company access control/access regulation.

Security works best when all trades collaborate. This includes access control, door management, ID card management, visitor management and parking lot management. Video surveillance and interfaces to peripheral systems, such as the intruder alarm system, provide access control with additional security functions. It also makes sense to integrate time recording systems, since the same identification medium can be used for both. This applies regardless of whether you opt for company ID cards, key fobs or a smartphone.
